Abstract
Integration of GIS with Work Management Systems for Public Works Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Michael Garcia Historically for Public Works departments within a local government, managing infrastructure has been a difficult process. Hand drawn maps offered little to no information about the assets themselves or what condition they were in. This meant that most resident calls resulted in a more reactive response to repair something. GASB 34 and NPDES compliance have offered local governments the opportunity to shift their practice into proactive asset management. By utilizing GPS to map infrastructure, our inventory data has been migrated into GIS. We have integrated GIS with our existing work management system to implement a comprehensive asset management program. GIS and ArcIMS are being used by staff for routine field inspections to proactively monitor public assets. This enables field staff to better plan repairs or replacement activities and management to develop long-term capital improvement funding plans. GIS will provide better customer service and more responsible use of public tax dollars.
