Abstract
Building the Technology Pipeline from Education to Industry Track: Education Author(s): Leslie Wilkins Environmental And Spatial Technology (EAST) program rises to the top as a "best practices" model that has truly transformed the intermediate and secondary learning environments. Maui Economic Development Board led the public/private funding partnership to launch this interdisciplinary lab course in six public high schools and one middle school on the islands of Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. Currently serving 400 students, the mission of EAST is to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills by engaging students in an educational environment steeped in emerging technologies and focused on self-direction and community service. Learning Esri software has become an anchoring tool for student projects. Examples of community service projects students designed using Esri products include mapping the invasive coqui frog, beach sites, fire response systems and mosquito breeding in regard to dengue fever. Students have provided valuable information to county health and fire officials and other industry partners.
