Abstract
Terrain Modeling for Recreational Trail Planning in Los Angeles County Track: Modeling Author(s): Eric Charlton The Altadena Crest Trail, along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California, has been in the planning stages since the early 1970s. Only portions of the trail have been constructed, however, resulting in significant gaps that have greatly diminished the trail's recreational value. The terrain of the Altadena Crest Trail is characterized by extreme topographic variety and unstable soils; the trail area also traverses multiple parcels of private property and abuts a heavily urbanized area. To assist our client, the county of Los Angeles, in its plans to design and develop the Altadena Crest Trail, the use of ArcGIS 3D Analyst extension and the Spatial Analyst extension proved indispensable for terrain modeling and 3D visualization. Optimum locations for new trail segments to fill in connectivity gaps were successfully identified through terrain modeling combined with data analysis of a wide range of factors.
