Abstract
 Urban Design Charrette by Using Advice Maps in Nagata, Kobe Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Takahiro Tanaka, Yoshito Yamazaki, Shusuke Inachi, Tomohiro Mikasa, Takuhiro Yamashita In January 1995, Kobe was subjected to a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Especially in Nagata ward, the area suffered severe damage. Residents, local government, designers, and planners have made the various efforts in its rebuilding. Even now, however, they have social, economic, and environmental problems. Therefore, we held the urban design charrette in Nagata. In the urban design charrette, by using GIS, some Advice Maps (Hint Maps) were presented to the participants views such as ecology, hydrology, geology, sociology, and so on. These naps were created by specialists in the research field and GIS analyst. By using this tool, the participants could integrate such factors in there planning and design process. In this paper, we present the outline of the charrette and discuss the effectiveness of GIS in the urban design charrette.
