Using an ArcGIS Software-Based Decision Support System for Watershed Planning
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Matt Moore, Jeff Christopherson

The South Washington Watershed District (SWWD) in Washington County, Minnesota, is experiencing rapid growth that is projected to continue over the next 20 years. The SWWD has taken preemptive action to deal with the storm water problems caused by this rapid development. A comprehensive inventory and model of the storm water conveyance systems and storage capacity within the watershed district were created. ArcGIS presented the most effective medium to manage the immense volume of data and create a spatially accurate representation of the watershed. Watershed characteristics were calculated from land cover, 2-foot topography, soils, and aerial photos. Models were set up using ArcGIS, exported and executed in XP-SWMM, and results were imported back into ArcGIS for analysis and mapping. Links were created that linked site photos, engineering plan sheets, and various notes directly to the modeling data via raster catalogs.
