Abstract
Mapping Service Delivery and Growth Impacts on Parks Facilities Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Buddy Rose, Sandy Stallman The Fairfax County Park Authority uses GIS to analyze the impact of residential development and population growth on park service delivery. Using population-based service level standards adopted for 23 park facility types and geocoded park facility locations, service levels can be determined and graphically depicted for every park facility in the county. This graphic depiction of park facility service areas allows staff and decision makers to improve plans to acquire parkland and locate park facilities to best serve resident needs on a localized and countywide basis. These service area maps are also used to identify service-deficient areas and determine impacts of new development on park service levels. Using this tool, the Park Authority can more proactively plan where to locate future facilities, gauge the impact of new development and address service-level issues.
