Abstract
Streamlining Cancer Rate Mapping and Analysis with ArcGIS Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Edward Lutz The Indiana State Department of Health has developed a tool for rapidly calculating cancer rates for different geographies--census tract, counties, minor civil divisions, ZIP Code, and watersheds. The use of SQL and a solid relational database behind an Esri ArcMap front end provides a very flexible and configurable environment for filtering disease rate calculation by cancer type, time period, and age/gender/race/ethnicity classes. An automated data mining approach finds areas with significantly high rates across multiple time periods and cancer types. Esri Tracking Analyst is used for temporal presentation of results. Custom cancer type definitions using specific combinations of primary site and histology are easily defined and saved. Integration with cluster analysis software is being explored.
