Geostatistics Comparison Study at the Idaho National Laboratory
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Linda Tedrow, Luke White

The Subsurface Disposal Area at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is a large shallow subsurface burial ground for low-level radioactive and mixed waste. This facility has been active since the early 1950s and has received a wide variety of waste forms from many different generators.

Geostatistical tools have been instrumental in determining the spatial extent and the quantity of contaminants interred in the Subsurface Disposal Area. A wide variety of geostatistical techniques have helped to understand the vadose and groundwater environment, including kriging, k-nearest neighbor, and statistical simulations. This paper will compare and contrast results from our existing geostatistical toolset with the capabilities offered by Geostatistical Analyst.
