Abstract
New GIS Products Support Crime Analysis and CompStat Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Rudy Pichardo The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has redesigned its crime mapping software system in response to the expanding role of Chief William J. Bratton's Computer Statistics (CompStat) command accountability inspection process. The new system provides real-time crime, arrest, and other data to assist managers in decision making when creating crime reduction strategies, allocating resources, and deploying personnel. ERSI's mapping software brings the LAPD in line with the city standard and allows for the sharing of map layers and its corresponding data with other city departments. The new Crime Analysis Mapping System (CAMS), is a two-tiered system. One application provides crime analysts with a front-end query tool and the ability to integrate Esri's ArcView and Spatial Analyst software capabilities. The second application is Web-based, allowing officers, detectives, and managers to perform queries from any local area network-connected computer in the department.
