Abstract
Showing Local Government Managers the Value of GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): David Borak IT staff, planners, public works officials and others often struggle to find the right strategy to help their chief elected and appointed officials understand the value of investing and maintaining GIS as an important tool for local government services, both to facilitate internal coordination and to improve citizen services and access to information. This session will bring practitioners together (both manager and IT staff) to share ideas and strategies that have worked to demonstrate the importance and high-return value of GIS. Topics will include demonstrated ROI on GIS investment, improved information collection and data quality, and improved citizen services/civic engagement. Discussants will share real-life stories about how they made the final compelling case/decision to invest in GIS across local government such as discussing costs of GIS across time and functions.
