Using 3D Analyst to Model Light Rail Project
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Rod Sandoval

The 2010 Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system plan, approved in 1995, included the expansion of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) DART system to the town of Rowlett. The Preliminary Engineering and Environmental Assessment phases of the project have been completed, and we are now addressing the public involvement phase. As required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the public involvement process will help ensure that stakeholder concerns--from local residents and businesses to public officials--are heard and addressed and that the resulting project has broad public support. To help the public visualize and better understand our information, we are implementing the graphically digestible medium of 3D modeling. Using Esri's 3D Analyst, we will create an accurate three-dimensional model of the study area along the rail line including structural, land use, vegetation, and surface utility layers from survey, engineering, and aerial data.
