GIS and Grief: Leveraging Technology and Theory to Heal
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Jeffrey Bergmann

Dealing with death is difficult in any situation. Many coping strategies include helping the bereaved recognize, actualize, and accept the loss. The challenge for the friends and families of deceased service members is that the death often occurs on battlefields thousands of miles from home. Many times they find it challenging to find closure without visiting the location where their loved one died. Utilizing GIS technology, the friends and family can reconnect with a deceased service member by visiting the location of their service member's death or their resting place, even if they cannot travel to the actual location. This technology will help the bereaved keep the service member's memory alive and allow family and friends to stay connected to the deceased service member in a therapeutic way.
