CBOLT: Visualizing NetCDF Model Output as Spatial Features in ArcSDE
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Josh Murphy, Jason Marshall, John Ulmer, Jennifer Boulware, Dave Eslinger

The Chesapeake Bay Oyster Larvae Tracker (CBOLT) was developed to demonstrate the utility of Coastal and Ocean Observation Systems (COOS) for decision making in the Chesapeake Bay Estuary. CBOLT gives users the ability to control a particle-tracking model and view the output as spatial features within an ArcIMS internet mapping Web site. Larval transport is predicted using the output of a physical oceanographic model of the Chesapeake Bay, which is driven by oceanographic observations of wind and current speed and direction, temperature, salinity, and freshwater flow obtained from in situ buoys and sensors. A custom-developed spatial processor uses UCAR's NetCDF libraries and Esri's ArcSDE Java API to parse model output and create spatial features within an enterprise geodatabase. These spatial features include starting and ending positions for each model run, particle tracks, and endpoint larval distribution probability polygon features.
