Abstract
Miles and Miles of Mains to Maintain Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): J. Scherffius On February 1, 2002, Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) was recognized as a newly consolidated water district, formed by the merging of two predecessor water districts. The combining of these two water districts resulted in an infrastructure of distribution water mains 4" to 12" in diameter over 670 miles in length. The new SSWD Administration inherited an infrastructure of water mains that included areas that had high incidence of reported leaks and multiple repairs. The task was to develop a Water Main Replacement Plan that would replace old, unreliable, and undersized water mains over the next 20 years. Four main criteria were defined. GIS was used in the decision-making process to determine which water mains were highest in priority to be replaced first. J.
