Implementing ArcView© for Firewise Community Planning: Lessons Learned
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): James Smalley, Michele Steinberg, Andre LeDuc

From 2002 to 2004, 27 communities at risk from wildfire in the wildland/urban interface became designated ArcView/Firewise communities through a partnership between the national Firewise Communities® Program and Esri. The communities adopted and were trained in the use of this GIS mapping program as part of an overall strategy to mitigate the wildland fire hazard through community planning and action. In addition, a selected number of these communities integrated ArcView with HAZUS, FEMA's multihazard loss estimation and mitigation GIS system. These communities have now seen two or more wildfire seasons since the implementation of the program and have had experience with software installation, training, software upgrades, and use of GIS as a planning and, in some cases, emergency management tool. This session will report on an independent review coordinated by the National Fire Protection Association's Research Foundation that gathered information about successes and challenges from early adopter communities.
