Metadata for Extraction and Sharing Data
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Mary Matella, Carrie Muenks

The creation of metadata is commonplace in the GIS industry now, but while we are good at creating metadata, finding intuitive and creative ways to get people to use the metadata records is still in its infancy. However, FEMA's overall vision is to create "A Nation Prepared," and metadata is paving the way for flood hazard data to be readily accessible.

Metadata is no longer just "data about data;" rather through common terminology and definitions, metadata is facilitating the documentation and retrieval of geospatial data. FEMA's Mapping Information Platform (MIP) is a Web-based technology that enables the management, production, extraction, and sharing of FEMA's Map Modernization data. Metadata is key to the discovery and access of that data.

This presentation will discuss the MIP components Content Manager and Map Viewer, which use metadata to catalog, query, and retrieve data.
