GIS: Own Part of the Crime Triangle
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): George Poole

A crime is composed of three basic variables: the offender, the victim or target, and the geographic location. Utilizing the power of a geospatial database provides the user with instant ownership of a key variable in the crime triangle.

Crime data can come from numerous sources: police reports, sex offender databases, parole and pardons, gang intelligence, and other databases. Developing, maintaining, and sharing valid, reliable, and timely data is vital to identifying crime series and trends. The process can be further enhanced by entering crime data while simultaneously reviewing past crimes in the same geographic area and/or similar crime categories.

Cobb County has developed a geodatabase and suite of ArcGIS software-based tools to track and analyze crime within the county. All crime data is unique, but with these tools strategic, tactical, administrative, and problem-solving analysis can be improved by utilizing geospatial data entry and immediate analysis.
