Spatial Data Infrastructure and Data Preservation in North Carolina
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Steven Morris, Jeff Essic, Robert Farrell

The North Carolina Geospatial Data Archiving Project is a joint project of the North Carolina State University Libraries and the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, focusing on collection and preservation of state and local agency digital geospatial data resources. The three-year project is being carried out in collaboration with the Library of Congress under the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) in a partnership with the North Carolina OneMap initiative, a statewide framework for data coordination and distribution. A core project objective is the engagement of established spatial data infrastructure in the challenge of long-term preservation of digital geospatial data. Emerging issues related to engaging spatial data infrastructure will be addressed including metadata outreach, data content standards and best practices, archival rights, development of digital repository architecture, and the emergence of regional and local collaborations as testbeds for innovation.
