Abstract
Importing the past: historical geography on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): John Bottelli Historical documents were imported into a GIS to create historical map layers suitable for analysis and planning for natural resource management. Emphasis was placed on existing documents that contained data about the landscape of the Coeur d'Alene Reservation at various points in time. Eighteen historical GIS map layers with supporting documentation were created, and a wide body of source material was cataloged and inventoried for further investigation. An atlas of maps is presented that shows changes in the landscape of the Coeur d'Alene Reservation through time. Sample analysis and implications for natural resource management are discussed. Results suggest GIS technology can contribute a new set of tools to the field of environmental history.
