Utilization of evidence-based GIS analyses is helping to improve the quality of health care and increase the effectiveness of the Yemen health system. The USAID-funded Partners for Health Reform plus Project (PHRplus) is working with the Yemen Ministry of Public Health and Population (MoPHP) to help national and local health officials utilize the power of GIS to improve the health care efficiency, equity, and accessibility in five underserved governorates. Health officials are assessing needs and allocation of resources according to priorities highlighted with health GIS map outputs. Health data analyses using GIS are improving planning and response capabilities to specific health care needs. The MoPHP, USAID, and the health sector donor community are better informed on how their projects and programs can be optimized. Lessons learned during the process of building consensus and integrating data as well as the resultant Health GIS Toolkit will be discussed.
