Abstract
Long-Term Archiving of Geospatial Data: The NGDA Project Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure Author(s): Julie Sweetkind-Singer, John Banning Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, have joined together to lead the formation of the National Geospatial Digital Archive (NGDA), a collecting network for the archiving of geospatial data. The project is being funded by the Library of Congress under the auspices of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP). During the three-year course of the grant, which started in September 2004, both institutions will construct robust digital archives focusing on common technologies with variations in design and emphasis. The talk will focus on an overview of the NGDA project including collection development issues and the technical considerations of long-term preservation. Specific emphasis will be placed on the development of a geospatial format registry, a step necessary to ensure that the preservation object or file is fully understood and is able to be re-created.
