Integrating Biodiversity into Private and Public Forest Planning and Certification
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Pat Comer

Private and public forest planning is undergoing significant transformation due to changes in forest product and real estate economics, sustainable forestry certification, and forest policy on public lands. Certification and National Forest Plan Revision processes in particular are placing new emphasis on biodiversity retention, but current tools and methods are inadequate for properly integrating biodiversity. In partnership with forest industry, state Natural Heritage Programs, and the USDA Forest Service, we have developed and applied spatial DSS tools and conservation methods to both private and public forest planning in the southeast and Rocky Mountain regions of the United States. These improvements facilitate rapid evaluation of multiple forest management scenarios related to biodiversity retention, allowing managers to select the most appropriate plan scenarios. Full implementation will support certification processes and policy requirements for national forests.
