Abstract
Querying a Document Management System Using a GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Karl von Schlieder, Jeffrey Hecht The city of Carlsbad, California, has deployed a Web-based application that streamlines access to information about public works infrastructure. The application integrates the city's GIS database with its document management system (DMS). An ArcIMS map display enables users to point at facilities to retrieve as-builts and other documents from the DMS. Users can also start their search in the DMS and generate map displays that correspond to documents of interest. The integration is driven by a number of different types of relationships defined between the schemas of the GIS and the DMS. It is flexible, customizable, and is able to accommodate various differences between the two systems in how similar data fields are formatted. The GIS-DMS integration has proven critical to system acceptance by users. This paper describes the application and discusses lessons learned in the implementation of the GIS-DMS integration.
