A Distributed Semantic GIS Metadata Framework
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Youliang Qiu, John Felkner

A comprehensive GIS metadata repository is one of the most important components of a distributed geographic information system. It has become essential to have a semantically interoperable GIS metadata repository to deal with the totality of geospatial concepts, categories, relations and processes. This paper examines existing metadata standards and their implementation frameworks, and then presents a semantic GIS metadata architecture based on ArcIMS/ArcSDE Server as a solution for searching, indexing and retrieving distributed GIS data on the Internet. Heterogeneous economic, culture and environmental data in Thailand, collected from various resources, are used in this framework to support a collaborative research project on Thailand economic development organized by the University of Chicago Economics Department and Anthropology Department and the University of Florida Geography Department. This prototype architecture offers advanced reasoning on metadata, hides complexity of metadata from users and allows semantic queries mixing reasoning and querying.
