Abstract
Disaster Management Modeling and Visualization at the Department of Energy Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response Author(s): Budhendra Bhaduri, Mark Tuttle, Eddie Bright, Phil Coleman, Amy King, Marie Minner, Paul Johnson In 2003, the Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration Division of the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability at DOE formed the Visualization and Modeling Workgroup (VMWG) to enhance modeling, analysis, and visualization for energy emergencies. The VMWG supports real energy sector emergencies (e.g., hurricanes), for predesigned exercises intended to improve emergency response capability and to improve strategic response to energy sector issues. The VMWG is composed of experts from several DOE offices as well as energy infrastructure and modeling experts from many DOE national laboratories. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is responsible for modeling and visualizing population dynamics, rail transportation infrastructure, commodity movements, and port infrastructure. This presentation will include an overview of the VMWG and discussion of recent VMWG activities with particular reference to applications of population dynamics modeling, rail transportation impacts, and port/commodity analysis for recent natural disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and tsunami relief efforts.
