Geoinformatics for Oil Palm Plantation Management
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Ragu Ponusamy

FELCRA is currently modernizing its oil palm plantation management using geoinformation technologies. FELCRA has undertaken research to explore the potentials of GIS for oil palm plantation management. A study area of matured oil palm was selected to develop an oil palm database management system (OPDMS). While remote sensing provided the topographical base information, the biophysical and climatic datasets were obtained from ancillary sources. These information forms the key GIS features for the OPDMS. Users can interactively query the OPDMS for various measurements and reports. OPDMS also includes the oil palm block management and oil palm tree inventory applications. Block management monitors crop performance on a block basis with a decision support program to enable interactive decision making on replanting based on crop performance criteria. The tree inventory application permits assessment of individual palm tree records. Displaying the spatial extent of diseased, healthy and missing trees is pertinent to evaluating performance of different sources of planting materials.
