Creating Geodata from Unstructured Text
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Bill Hargenrader

Large unstructured data sources composed of varying types of Web content, such as news feeds, Web site-specific text, etc., frequently contain information that may be of value to the intelligence community or other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the pursuit of national security and homeland defense. By nature of its unstructured format, important spatially referenced information and its surrounding context (attributes) are often lost in the analytical process. Automating the recognition and transformation of this information into a format for data analysis and processing within geospatial information systems is a critical gap in existing technologies and capabilities. This paper describes recent research, development and prototype integration engineering conducted by Northrop Grumman in the creation of geodata from various unstructured data sources.
