Abstract
A Cultural Resource Data Model for World Heritage Sites Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): John Knoerl OMB Circular A-16 designates the NPS as the lead agency for developing spatial data standards for cultural resources to be used throughout the federal government. CRGIS, acting as the lead program within NPS, has drafted a set of guidelines and implementing GIS data model for cultural resources. CRGIS field tested the model using data from the 20 U.S. World Heritage Sites, 17 of which are national park units. The model proved to be robust and flexible enough to accommodate the recent Operational Guidelines put forward by the UNESCO World Heritage Center. This conclusion is critical. If these standards and data model are to be used by other federal agencies, many of which have long-standing preservation programs, they must be shown to be adaptable to legacy databases and data. So far we are encouraged by the results. John Knoerl National Park Service CRGIS 1201 Eye St. NW Washington , DC 20005 US Phone: 202 354 2140 E-mail: john_knoerl@nps.gov |
