Abstract
Republic of Congo Protected Areas Get on the Map Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Chris Frye The tropical forests of the Republic of Congo are home to some of the last thriving populations of lowland gorilla, chimpanzees, bongo and the mysterious forest elephant as well as a myriad of other plants and animals. Congo's Ministry of Economic Forestry and Wildlife is now developing a national forestry and protected area database. With the help of the Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE), the Wildlife Conservation Society, the World Resources Institute, the U.S. Forest Service and others, Congo's first comprehensive natural resource geodatabase should be operational in early 2007. The geodatabase data model is being employed for its power, simplicity and scalability as the Republic of Congo builds its world-class integrated resource database. This paper describes the management issues, international collaboration, technical challenges and solutions arising from this ongoing project.
