Mapping the Vegetation of National Parks Using Standard Ecological Classifications
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Judy Teague, Rickie White

Since 1994, NatureServe has been partnering with the National Park Service and others to classify and map the vegetation of national park units of the United States. This effort applies nationally standardized ecological classifications including the U.S. National Vegetation Classification and the U.S. Terrestrial Ecological Systems Classification. These standard classifications provide a hierarchy of thematic resolutions for mapping vegetation composition and structure throughout these important natural resource areas. Maps can be tailored to provide finer or coarser map units, depending on the needs of the park. Ecological classifications are developed and refined through the collection of ground data, and they are mapped using a variety of methods including spatial modeling and photointerpretation. This presentation includes an overview and some examples of the methods, tools and products from these efforts.
