Abstract
 Hong Kong Highways Maintenance Improved by Using Esri GIS Software Track: Transportation Author(s): Craig Dovey China Harbour Engineering Co. (CHEC) is undertaking a four-year public/private partnership contract with Hong Kong Highways Department (HyD) for inspection, maintenance and repair of its road network. Esri has been employed by CHEC to develop a customised Electronic Maintenance Management System (EMMS) for this project. The EMMS is required to hold and manage road inventory data and road maintenance data for the duration of the project. This paper will discuss the use of Esri ArcPad, ArcInfo,ArcIMS and ArcSDE GIS software for on-site collection of road defect data using personal digital assistants and subsequent upload to the EMMS; obstacles that occurred during development and how they were overcome and how the software was customised for CHEC- and HyD-specific requirements. The paper will look at the overall benefits of using GIS for the contractor and client and how improvements may be made in future maintenance projects. Craig Dovey China Harbour Engineering Co.
