Abstract
The National Park Service Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Heather Stanton, Stephanie O'Meara, James Chappell, Ron Karpilo, Greg Mack, Georgia Hybels Geologic maps are an integral component of the physical science inventories stipulated by the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS has identified GIS and digital cartographic products as fundamental resource management tools. There are few geologists employed at parks; thus, these tools are particularly important to NPS to aid resource managers in using geologic data for park management decisions. As part of the Geologic Resources Evaluation being developed by the NPS Geologic Resources Division, geologic GIS data is being created for each park with significant geologic resources. To provide guidelines for data capture, the NPS Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model was recently adopted. The data model utilizes the functionality of the geodatabase to improve data quality and speed of feature capture over the previous coverage/shapefile model, utilizing domains, subtypes and relationship classes with attribute validation and topological rules within and between related feature classes.
