Abstract
Spatial Data Convicts North Korean Drug Traffickers Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Greg Barras On the 17 of April 2003, Victoria Police Search and Rescue Squad (SAR) members played a pivotal role in locating and capturing a crew member of the North Korean drug ship, the Pong Su. Located in the offender's possession was a GPS receiver that contained data showing the many recognisance trips made by ground crews and other points of interest. This data was displayed in ArcGIS, which allowed SAR members to retrace the steps of the offenders and gather crucial evidence. This evidence was presented to the Victorian Supreme Court in October 2005 and assisted in securing a conviction for all ground party members. This amazing story highlights the importance of geospatial technology, its application in fighting crime and assisting with homeland security. It discusses the changing way that evidence is now presented and accepted by High Courts within Australia. It demonstrates the advantages of using an electronic forum to address members of the jury.
