Abstract
Mapping in Support of NATO's Rapid Response Force (NRF) Operations Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Andreas Zellhuber During June 2006 NATO NRF will participate in the largest NRF live exercise in NATO's history. Approximately 8,000 NATO soldiers will physically deploy to the Cape Verde Islands, west of Africa. To provide the troops, as well as all involved HQs, with appropriate geospatial information, NC3A has been tasked to produce updated mapping including a 1:25,000-scale topographic map series according to military standards. To achieve this task, NC3A developed a customised mapping production workflow requiring complex map datum transformations, rectification of aerial imagery, feature data extraction, map template design and subsequent mass printing. This paper describes the various processing steps, challenges and lessons learned in the production of time critical NRF mapping.
