Hurricane Vulnerability Assessment and Disaster Response in Wake County
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Janie Ivonne Greathouse-Edgerton

An important aspect of the responsibilities of the Office of America's Homeland Security Division of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is the support of lead federal agencies during disasters. The purpose of this project is to develop a GIS-based emergency response tool called Hurricane Evaluation and Livestock Protection (HELP) that will enable emergency management agencies to more effectively address that responsibility. This GIS-based emergency response tool may be used by the Office of America's Homeland Security Division in support of future national emergencies.

The GIS developed through the completion of this project will allow planners to easily locate and identify critical asset information in support of modeling, vulnerability assessments, and visualization of impact areas. For this purpose, the area of consideration will be narrowed to Wake County, North Carolina.
