Instituting Land-Use Controls for Environmental Compliance and Planning
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Robert Beachler

The 611 Air Support Group Geo Integration Office is employing ArcGIS and the Spatial Data Standard for Facilities, Infrastructure and the Environment (SDSFIE) to compile, integrate and disseminate environmental hazard information for U.S. Air Force installations in remote Alaska. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation regulations require that environmentally hazardous areas at active, inactive and excess installations be identified, delineated and have appropriate Land Use Controls (LUC). LUC describe the type and source of the contamination or hazard as well as the mandatory restrictions on development that are conveyed with the property. The presentation highlights the use of GIS to support environmental compliance issues, and discusses the challenges with integrating a wide variety of disparate data sources and formats.
