An Application of ArcObjects for Tracking and Warning Dismounted Soldiers
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Fernando Maymi, Paul Manz

Ancile is an information system that warns dismounted soldiers of incoming indirect fire attacks while reporting their location to existing command and control systems. The main component of this system is a pagerlike device worn by individual soldiers. This device periodically transmits the soldier's location and listens for threat warnings. When a threat warning is received, the pager sounds an alarm that increases in frequency as the threat approaches, allowing soldiers to improve their protective posture before the rounds detonate near them. This paper provides an overview of the system's architecture, describes its prototypical implementation, and discusses some results of field testing during a live-fire exercise. It also highlights the development of a bridge device using ArcObjects, which allows users to track current and historical data for both soldiers and indirect fire attacks. We conclude by discussing potential applications of this system and the work that remains to be done.
