Abstract
The Modifiable Area(l) Unit Problem in Urban Planning Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Author(s): Nishant Kukadia, Ruchi Mohinder Geographic data is often aggregated in order to present analyses in a more useful context. Variation in the data aggregation methodologies can cause misrepresentation of data and in turn lead to serious inconsistency in the interpretation of results. Infering from such analyses leads to ecological fallacy at the spatial level. This is largely defined as the Modifiable Area(l) Unit Problem (MAUP) in the fields of Geography and Urban Planning. This study intends to test the sensitivity of the two effects of MAUP--the scale effect and the zonal effect. The study utilizes grid data for the Boston Metropolitan Region and computes urban indicators at varying levels of aggregation. The results of this study provide direction for further research to minimize such inaccuracies during data aggregation.
