Volume Calculations Using Spatial and 3D Analyst

In the environmental industry remediation projects often involve excavation of contaminated sediments out of a basin. An estimated volume of sediment must be calculated and promulgated in the contract as a measurement of achievement and payment. Many projects do not have the funds available to conduct pre and post bathymetric surveys. This paper discusses various methods used to calculate volume. Of the three traditional methods to calculate volume, kriging produces the most accurate estimate. Kriging the point data to predict a volume estimate prior to dredging or to confirm the volume removed post dredging provides a powerful tool for project planners and managers. When pre and post dredging sediment thickness point data are available these calculations and 3D presentation of the data can be produced quickly at a minimal cost compared to bathymetric surveys and LIDAR data processing and analyses.
