The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Refuges Program has a long and varied history of using GIS to facilitate decision making and management on lands owned and managed by the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Refuge Lands GIS (RLGIS) was developed as the result of an identified need by National Wildlife Refuge managers and wildlife biologists to collect, manage, and use spatial information about the lands they manage in a consistent and effective manner. Localized databases and data management tools developed during the late 1990s were used as a foundation for the development of the current, comprehensive data model and tool functionality. RLGIS is comprised of 3 geodatabases and associated domains that include feature classes and related tables to store information for real property and other features, habitat and landcover, and resource management. A desktop interface and associated tools, and custom data collection forms were developed in ArcMap and ArcPad, respectively.
