Metadata for Geoscientists
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Don Downey

Geologic interpretation projects generate hundreds of files over the lifetime of a project. A typical geologist creates an average of two to three important documents each week. The problem is how to find the critically important files needed for the next interpretation project. For a solution, look at how the government manages data, they had to be organized and created geospatial metadata standards. What are the metadata elements and standards needed by geologists? The goal is populate the metadata to make the metadata searchable and to maintain metadata elements for ownership and data retention time. Metadata is harvested and recorded automatically, but manual updates create the most useful search items. Custom metadata editors, template libraries, macros and xml stylesheets are especially useful for populating multiple datasets within a project. Entry of theme codes and keywords into metadata elements in a metadata profile customizes content specifically for a particular user community.
