Using GIS for Water and Sewer Demand Forecasting
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Michael Hoolihan, Ali Diba

The first step in preparing or revising a water or wastewater master plan is the forecasting of future demands. Future demands for a given area must be carefully estimated before any distribution or collection system model can be applied, pipelines or storage reservoirs sized. With the increasing reliance on alternate or non-potable water sources to meet demands, the forecast should also separately estimate the different types of demand. This paper presents an innovative approach to estimate water and sewer demands for a developing area using GIS. Authors will discuss the intricacies and demonstrate the power of GIS to overcome challenges in water supply planning and demand forecasting.
