Creating the Saskatchewan Canada Stream Network
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Will Stafford, Dana Jones

This project was initiated by Saskatchewan Environment who wanted to utilize the Nature Conservancy Stream Classification System. The first step was to create a seamless stream network. The only data set available was Natural Resources Canada, National Topographic System 1:50,000 water courses and lakes. The first hurdle to overcome was the development of through lake arc segments that connected the input / output streams. The processes outlined here can be used to develop similar stream networks anywhere as long as these conditions are met: the stream data must exist as lines, waterbodies as polygons, data format is ArcInfo coverage format, and processors have access to ArcInfo 7+ with the ArcGrid extension. In this work all multi-path segments were removed leaving only main path arcs. The final editing process used Landsat 7TM Colour Composites as background to visualize connections between lakes and streams that were not present in the original NTS50 data.
