3D GIS for Subsurface Analysis
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Kimberly Neilson, Gary Hecox

Three-dimensional (3D) GIS technology has been developed allowing for the efficient assessment of subsurface geology, hydrogeology, and contamination. This powerful technology integrates results from several commercial software programs using the 3D analysis and rendering capabilities of ArcGIS and ArcScene allowing geologists and hydrogeologists to effectively evaluate subsurface conditions and solve three dimensional problems. A case study illustrates the technology involving development of a comprehensive 3D GIS model for subsurface assessment of lithology and stratigraphy, groundwater flow directions and velocities, and definition of the NAPL (non-aqueous phase liquid) bodies. 3D GIS allowed for efficient and robust definition of NAPL extent, migration rates, and lithologic relationships; soil and NAPL remediation volumetric analysis; and configuration evaluations for remedial alternatives. This project demonstrated 3D GIS to be an effective and efficient technology for subsurface evaluation.
