Mapping Your Vintage: GIS in Wine Country
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Ryan Tombs, Michael Sebastiani

Have you ever wondered what makes that special bottle of wine so special?. Next time think GIS. Generations of Sonoma, a winery located in the heart of wine country is harnessing the power of GIS to manage and optimize many aspects of their wine growing operation. Throughout the growing season ArcPad is utilized in the field to collect varietal specific data such as soil moisture, sugar content, vine health, among other important data sets. Harvest data, stored in an SDE enabled SQL database, is linked to vineyard spatial data such as area, spacing and distribution to determine yield output, and consequently per bottle pricing. All this data is made available to the public by means of an IMS enabled website permitting the consumer to satisfy their curiosity as it relates to their favorite Chardonnay, or Cabernet Sauvignon vintage. Cheers.
