ConnectServices: Web Enabled Social Services
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Shelton Mercer, Megan Heckert

In the Greater Philadelphia region, there is a maze of federal, state, and local government social service programs such as Medicare, county assistance, Social Security and disability programs, job training, drug counseling, and health care. ConnectServices, a project of the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC), is a visually-coherent arrangement of our region's social services. In other words it is a geographically enabled and interactive health and human services directory. Not only maps, but informational graphics and text enable citizens and social workers to determine what programs they are enrolled in, where they are located, and how to reach them. The Web-based mapping application uses Web services for routing and a user-friendly map interface for navigation. The application is publicly available on the web and illustrates a forward thinking use of GIS for social workers.
