Abstract
Identifying Locations for Parks in San Diego County Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Michael Dangermond Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation is a growing sport within California. Siting a new OHV park is complicated, due to land restrictions, habitat plans, and the need for buffers. Since legal recreation areas are primarily clustered in the eastern desert area, where temperatures are very hot in the summer, there is a high unmet need for legal recreation areas in western San Diego County. Unsanctioned OHV riding is causing damage to the environment and sensitive natural resources. The Dangermond Group was hired to identify places where an OHV park (SVRA) may be developed within western San Diego County. Locations were identified with GIS that were away from residences and near highways, and on poor quality habitat, among other things. Techniques developed for this project may also be applicable to identifying and siting active parks and other facilities that may have conflicts with existing land uses.
