Paper
Delivering Weather Products Based on a Spatial Data Infrastructure
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Peter Trevelyan

The Met Office relies heavily on visualisation and production systems, and for efficiency reasons the systems are closely-coupled and optimised to create specific types of product. As a consequence the production chain is inflexible e.g. adding a high resolution map background is costly as this entails making programmatic changes. The OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) have developed a number of system interface and data model standards that describe the transfer of features, maps, grids, in a standard way across a network using Internet protocols. Using these interfaces has proved to be a powerful and effective way of connecting "Services" that have geospatial content. The Geography Markup Language (GML) has been used to express meteorological data and geographic entities, as well as an open interchange format for geographic data. The paper will outline the experiences gained with this technology and particularly the use of Esri's OGC compliant web map and feature services
