Abstract
The Coastal-Marine Manager's Toolkit for Ecosystem-Based Management Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Pat Halpin, Patrick Crist, Sarah Carr A wide variety of software tools have been developed to help policymakers and managers implement ecosystem-based management (EBM) in coastal and marine environments. For example, existing EBM tools can predict ecosystem response to human and natural disturbances, select optimal areas for conservation or restoration, help visualize the impact of development and resource-use scenarios on an ecosystem, help collect local knowledge about a resource, and facilitate stakeholder voting on management alternatives. This presentation will provide information on the range of EBM tools, the functionality of a small set of "priority" tools that appear to be most useful for common EBM tasks, and provide guidance on selecting the most appropriate tools for an EBM project. We will also describe an on-line resource for information about EBM tools (www.ebmtools.org) and provide information on upcoming EBM tool training opportunities.
