Abstract
Monitoring Small Area Growth with GIS Track: Census and Geodemographics Author(s): Simon Choi, Ping Wang, Elizabeth Delgado, Kyuyoung Cho, SungHo Ryu This paper presents a technique of monitoring small area growth with GIS. Monitoring growth of small areas, including census tracts, blocks, or traffic analysis zones, becomes an important tool in measuring the progress of small area plans (e.g., transit oriented development). Although geo-coded databases have become more popular and easily accessible in recent days, most available data is still spatially aggregated. The raster cell approach is used to monitor small area growth and policies. The study is divided into two major components. The first part of the study develops socioeconomic estimates and forecasts for raster cells using land use information from both aerial photographs and local general plans. The second part of the study uses the raster cell data to assess small area housing growth, in particular, around the transit oriented development area in the Southern California region. ArcGIS Spatial Analyst is used to implement the raster cell method.
